My daughter is down with a sore throat. I am wondering what sort of food should be prepared for her to help ease her eating pains.

First of all, try to avoid food that may be hard to swallow or may require a lot of chewing. When there's a sore throat, even chewing can feel uncomfortable. Avoid acidic fruits and vegetables, like foods made with citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons or foods made with tomatoes( e.g. juices and sauces), avoid very cold or very hot foods or drinks. Forget a little about diets (sore throat will not remain forever :) and choose foods that are rather oily and soft. Like pasta. drink milk and milkshakes. juices (except orange, grapefruit and lemonade), fruit nectars flat soft drinks and non-alcoholic beer Add water or milk to drinks if you find them too strong. Other things that are easy to swallow and may help avoiding a bad feeling:

Soups are a very good options, aspecially, there are some good chinese soups, here are few recomendded: (you can find more recipes at http://www.chinesefood-recipes.com) A) Winter Melon Soup with Shiitakes and Speck Ham: 1 2-pound wedge winter melon 8 dried shiitake mushrooms 3 quarts chicken or vegetable stock 1 1-inch piece ginger, sliced into matchsticks Salt to taste Thinly sliced scallions or sautéed leeks A few slices speck ham, sliced on the diagonal Slice off and discard rind from winter melon. Remove and discard seeds. Slice melon flesh to 1-inch cubes. Soak shiitake mushrooms in room temperature water for 20 minutes, until softened. Squeeze out excess water, then thinly slice. Set aside. Bring broth to boil and add winter melon. Simmer winter melon for 25 to 30 minutes, until melon becomes slightly transparent and soft. Add shiitakes and ginger and simmer for another 5 minutes. Add salt to taste. Divide soup into individual bowls. If using leeks, briefly sauté in a wok with a little oil for 1 to 2 minutes. Top soup with sautéed leeks or scallions, then sliced speck ham. Serve while hot. B)Vegetable Soup Ingredients: •2 cans chicken broth •1/2 c. snow peas •1 pkg. tofu chopped •1 bunch celery, cabbage •1 c. fresh mushrooms •1 c. sliced zucchini •1 pkg. bean sprouts •1/4 c. soy sauce •1 tbsp. sesame seeds •1 can water chestnuts, drained Directions: 1.Heat chicken broth to boiling. 2.Add remaining ingredients. Simmer about 30 minutes until vegetables are just tender. C) Vegetables and pork soup: 500Gm Carrots(3-4 large) - Sliced 500Gm Onions (2 large) - Diced 200-300Gm Tomatoes - Diced 700Gm (Pork Loin or Pork Soup Bone(s)) - the soup bones give some extra flavour from the marrow in my opinion. You can buy all these from butcher or prepacked in local HK supermarket. Optional: - Corn Cob (1-2 Corn Cob cut into small pieces) - 2 Celery Sticks - sliced - If you really want HK authentic, add a couple of chicken feet as meat base. I swear the wife doesn't like it but I do. Too fatty she says !
We make the soup in the morning and by nighttime it's all ready. Usually, we leave overnnight for increased flavour & bring to the boil once more in the morning. Optionally, you can use oxtail as the meat base. Remember it takes a long time to get the oxtail tender so be patient. Again, we usually cook that type of meat overnight. |

Hi Edmund, How about hot milk with honey (1 or 2 tsp of honey for 1 cup of hot milk)? I used to drink it as a child when I was sick |
